Bariatric Surgery: An Alternative Treatment for Type 2 Diabetes
Written under: Health
A new study which was published in the August issue of Archives of Surgery claims that bariatric surgery can result to lower health care costs and medication requirements for patients with type 2 diabetes.
Martin A. Makary, MD and his co-authors in the study says that while bariatric surgery can be expensive (around $30,000), the lowered costs for health maintenance afterward can save money in the long run.
According to the study, over 80 percent of the monitored patients no longer needed to take any medicines for diabetes after a year of having the operation.
Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure mainly intended to treat obesity. The procedure entails reducing the size of the stomach through several means such as implanting a device, removing a portion of the stomach or re-routing the small intestines.
