Google remains keen on getting a socially-oriented and location-based services to mobile users as it releases the Google Places app for the iPhone on Wednesday. The app will give users access to reviews of nearby businesses and give their own reviews as well.
The app will use Hotpot, a local recommendation engine with social networking features. While Google users don’t have a connected network as big as Facebook users, the company hopes that the easy data entry which Hotpot provides will soon propel a larger social network.
Google engineer Greg Blevins writes, “Once you’ve added friends, you’ll find your results seasoned not just with reviews from around the Web and recommendations based on your own personal taste, but also with your friends’ opinions too.”
