Sherlock Holmes earned $24.9 million during its first day of release on Friday, as stated by distributor Warner Bros. Pictures. The previous record for a Christmas Day opening was Marley and Me with $14.4 million.

Other movies that made it big this weekend was Avatar, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, It’s Complicated and Up in the Air.
