Cancer experts have now confirmed that tanning beds can cause cancer. This ultraviolet radiation source used to be described as just “probable carcinogens” but now, it scientists are sure that it can.

Several new studies concluded that the risk of getting skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30.

The research was published in the medical journal Lancet Oncology last Wednesday.

“People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds,” said Vincent Cogliano, one of the researchers. “We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don’t think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan.”

Cogliano warned that ultravoilet radiation is not healthy, regardless of the source – whether from a tanning bed or from the sun.

The American Cancer Society advises people to instead use try bronzing or self-tanning creams instead of tanning beds.
