Turkey Cooking Times | How Long To Cook A Turkey Per Pound

Written under: Lifestyle, Pop Culture

It’s going to be Thanksgiving soon and you might be wondering how long should you cook a turkey. Well, the turkey cooking time is not the same for all turkeys, as we will teach you below.

We hope that you and your family will have a delicious Thanksgiving turkey. We’ll try to share with you some turkey recipes and other turkey cooking guide soon.

How Long To Cook A Turkey

  1. Measure the weight (W) of your turkey in pounds.
  2. Multiply the weight of your turkey in pounds by 15 to determine the total number of minutes to cook your turkey.

Example, your turkey is 15 lbs, then the turkey cooking time is 225 minutes. (sorry for the previous miscalculation)

Important Notes:

  • The cooking time above is for an unstuffed, thawed turkey in a 325 degree F oven. You should add 15 minutes cooking time if your turkey is stuffed.
  • Insert a cooking thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh to ensure your turkey is cooked to 180 degrees F before taking it out of the oven. If your turkey is stuffed, the temperature of the stuffing should be at least 165 degrees F.

Happy Thanksgiving!

the cooking time in the example shown should be 225 minutes. 15 x 15 is 225, and not 125. 🙂

  2. Debra says:

    Correction to the cooking time for a 15 lb. bird: 15 x 15 = 225 minutes(not 125 as stated above).

  3. JaNell Bosco says:

    I think you meant to say 225 minutes there, not 125 minutes. 15 x 15 = 225…. ??? Did I miss something?

i just put my turkey in, its 1200 mountian time, at 250 to slow cook the turkey. idk how long he needs to cook at that temperature. Can anyone help me with this dilemma?

  5. David says:

    15 lbs x 15 min. = 225 min. = 3:45 hours

  6. Sean says:

FYI, the cooking time in your 15 lb. turkey example should be 225 minutes, not the 125 you have listed.

  7. Chandler Bing says:

250 is a very dangerous temperature to attempt, as it is insufficient to kill bacteria, and will more likely breed bacteria (salmonella). The minimum temperature to safely avoid this with poultry is 325F. If you fear a too dry outcome, then cook until a slightly lower inside temp. The FDA recommends 180F at the thickest part of the breast, but Martha Stewart and Tyler Florence say that 160 – 165F works, and ensures a moist bird.

  8. Terry says:

Do you typically have the heat up higher in the beginning than turn it down to 350?
