Propane is the power behind your family barbecues and the key to warm houses during the cold winter months.

This powerful piece of equipment is a necessity for all homeowners but have you ever stopped and wondered how long does a propane tank last? Before investing in yours, you should understand how long their life actually spans so that you can get the most out of your tank.

Keep reading to learn more about propane tanks and how long they can last.

    What Do Propane Tanks Do?

Propane is a gas stored as a liquid known as liquefied petroleum. It provides gas for grills and appliances such as water heaters, refrigerators, stoves, and dryers. Propane tanks are a power source and they work by releasing the gas stored inside of them once their valve is turned.

    Tank Sizes

Since these tanks can operate several different machines, they come in a variety of sizes.

Propane tanks range in size from anywhere between twenty pounds to tanks that can hold two thousand gallons of gas. Each sized tank, however, is filled up to eighty percent of the container’s capacity.

Twenty-pound tanks are known as portables and are used for grills while larger ones are needed for appliances. The size of the tank you get is going to depend on the dimensions of your home since they can take up quite a bit of space.

Tanks can also get installed either above or below ground and you can read on here to find the best way to choose a propane tank for all of your at-home needs.

How Long Does a Propane Tank Last?

The lifespan of your propane tank is going to depend completely on its size.

Grilling tanks on average last anywhere between eighteen to twenty hours. If your grill is on the larger side, then you can expect the tank to last for about ten hours so it’s best to have a couple on hand for longer grilling days.

Tanks for your appliances have a much different life expectancy, they can actually last for several years. In fact, you can expect these larger tanks to last for twenty to thirty years. As with all appliances, however, you should monitor them throughout their life to ensure that they work properly during their expected timeframe.

    Gas Built to Last!

Propane tanks are a powerful piece of equipment that helps your house run smoothly. Whether its a family get together or taking a nice warm shower, they’re needed to make it all happen.

The propane tank lifespan is long, making these tanks out to be not only a requirement but also an investment that is well worth the price tag.

The first step in choosing the right tank for your home is understanding which appliances would benefit from them and having realistic measurements of your space. Following this advice will help you to never have to ask the question of ‘how long does a propane tank last’ because you’ll have a clear understanding that size equals longevity.
