Bed bugs are a hotel guest’s worst nightmare, and they are more common than most travelers realize. More than 80% of hotels have treated for bed bugs in the past year. But did you know they can also find their way into your home?

Nothing is more stressful than waking up with an itchy rash and wondering if your mattress is infested with biting insects. Luckily, bud begs are pretty easy to identify as the culprit.

Keep reading to learn the surest signs you have bed bugs, and tips for getting rid of bed bugs.

    A Trail of Bites

Not everyone is allergic to bed bugs, but you could experience an itchy rash 1-3 days after you are bitten. If you notice a straight line of raised bumps on your body, there’s a good chance bed bugs have been snacking on your blood.

Bed bugs aren’t dangerous, so there’s no need to visit a doctor unless you are very uncomfortable. They won’t spread disease or carry bacteria, but they can make a mess.

    Physical Evidence of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs hide very well, so you might not notice them until their population is out of control. If you suspect there’s an infestation in your home, look for small red or brown spots on your bedding. The stains could be blood or fecal matter.

Small spots can also appear on walls, curtains, and around the edges of your carpet. Also, check carefully between cushions and along seams for bed bug molts and eggs.

Bed bugs shed their skin as they grow. When it dries out, it crumbles and resembles fish food flakes. Their eggs are tiny and white.

    A Strange Smell

Bed bugs have scent glands that produce a sweet, musty smell. Some people think they smell like coriander. If you begin to notice an unusual scent in your home, it’s time to check for bed bug signs.

    Risky Behavior

If you recently stayed in a hotel or visited a friend with bed bugs, the little pests could have traveled home with you. Bed bugs can hitch a ride on your clothing and belongings. Buying used furniture also poses a risk.

Remember that bed bugs are not a sign of a dirty home. They can thrive in both filthy and sparkling clean conditions.

If You Found Signs You Have Bed Bugs

Did you find signs of bed bugs in your house? If the answer is yes, you should call a professional for help with bed bug treatment. It’s possible to slow the spread on your own, but you won’t be able to get rid of them.

An exterminator will use heat or safe insecticides to treat the affected area. There are a few ways to find the best bed bug exterminator in your area, so do your research before you make an appointment.

    Say Goodbye to Unwanted Houseguests

If you discover signs you have bed bugs in your home, don’t panic. Take a deep breath, wash your bedding, and call for assistance. Treating bed bugs is fast and effective, so they will soon be a distant memory.
